Who owns Europe’s media? Launch of the 2025 Euromedia Ownership Monitor (EurOMo)
Who controls the media landscape across Europe, and how is this shaping democracy? On Thursday, 6 November 2025, at 13:30, we invite researchers, policymakers, regulators, journalists, and civil society representatives the Press Club Brussels Europe for the launch of the new edition of the Euromedia Ownership Monitor (EurOMo). This event will be the first public presentation of the 2025 data, featuring a refined concept and new features.
This monitor has been established as a pilot project, funded by the European Commission, in 2022. Its mission is to enhance transparency of news media ownership and control in all 27 European Union countries. The monitor fulfils it by publishing:
- Databases with information on ownership and control of the most relevant news media in all EU countries, media ownership laws and relations between digital platforms and news media;
- findings such as country reports, ownership networks of cross-country media companies and risk assessments to transparency of information on ownership and control across EU countries.
The database of media owners is EurOMo's flagship, allowing users to search for the owners of the main European outlets. The 2025 instrument will add several features, such as search results in the form of network, search for other relevant instances of control (CEOs, editors-in-chief, etc.) and an advanced search with filters and machine-readable results.
EurOMo is implemented by a consortium of dozens of institutions and researchers across Europe and coordinated by the University of Salzburg. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.
