The Congolese Mangbetu women: from colonial curiosity to a source of strength and imagination
In 2026, Brussels will open its very first museum of modern and contemporary art: Kanal-Centre Pompidou, housed in the monumental former Citroën garage along the canal. But this new chapter also carries a heavy colonial history. How can a museum deal with its colonial legacy? How can a museum deal with its colonial legacy? And how can images that once served as propaganda be reimagined as sources of creativity and strength? Sandrine Colard – expert in African art and photography, and curator of the opening exhibition – shares in this lecture how she, and museums in general, take on that challenge.
