De dag dat het zonlicht niet meer scheen / The day the sun stopped shining is a documentary about the pioneering research conducted by VUB geologists Cem Berk Şenel and Pim Kaskes on the end of the dinosaur era. The documentary will have its world premiere during the opening night of ScienceVille—the science-focused section of the international documentary festival DOCVILLE.
VUB geologists Cem Berk Şenel and Pim Kaskes demonstrated that fine dust from pulverised rock, originating from the Chicxulub meteorite impact in Mexico 66 million years ago, remained suspended in the stratosphere for years. This blocked sunlight, causing the Earth to cool, halting photosynthesis, wiping out vegetation, and collapsing the food chain. These events contributed to the mass extinction of life on Earth—including the dinosaurs.
