Reconstructing Bookscapes.
A digital investigation on the private libraries of 18th-century princesses.

KIIP Seminar & Workshop by Joëlle Weis

On Wednesday 8 November between 16h15 and 17h45, Dr Joëlle Weis (Trier Center for Digital Humanities) will hold a seminar titled Reconstructing Bookscapes. A digital investigation on the private libraries of 18th-century princesses. The seminar will introduce a research project on the private libraries of 18th-century German princesses and investigate the epistemic and social practices related to these libraries. In the project, libraries are reconstructed with the help of a knowledge graph. The presentation will focus on data modelling, discuss first results as well as raise issues of archiving problems and "heritigization".

Joëlle Weis is head of the research area Digital Literary and Cultural Studies at the Trier Center for Digital Humanities. Her work focuses on early modern knowledge cultures, digital methods in collection and book studies as well as on Linked Open Data for the Humanities.

Workshop

On Tuesday 7 November, Dr Weis will also hold a workshop from 13:00 to 16:45 titled

Semantic Web and Linked Open Data: A hands-on workshop for beginners

The workshop introduces participants to the use of Semantic Web technologies and Linked Open Data in Digital Historical Studies with a special emphasis on Wikidata and Wikibase. The focus lies on practical knowledge on data modeling and data retrieving for the humanities, topics highly relevant for collaborative processes of (digital) scholarship. Basic knowledge of the query language SPARQL will be taught so that participants will be able to perform queries in Wikidata.

The workshop (venue: C5.03) can be attended by up to 20 people, so do register quickly.

The initiative for the KIIP series comes from VUB professor Kees-Jan Schilt, knowledge historian and philosopher. Every two weeks for four years, a renowned intellectual will come to VUB to give a talk on a topical subject. The aim behind the series is to break down the barriers between different sciences and create more connection between professors and students from different disciplines.

In the coming weeks, the KIIP Seminar will welcome historian of science Prof Dr Daniel Margocsy (University of Cambridge, 22 November) and expert in digital humanities and history of scholarship Prof. Dr. Rens Bod  (University of Amsterdam, 6 December).
