OceanConnectXL is a VUB initiative funded through the FWO International Coordination Action (ICA) programme, connecting early-career and experienced ocean professionals from around the world. Building on a global community of alumni trained in Flanders, the initiative creates opportunities to exchange knowledge, develop skills, foster intergenerational connections, and strengthen collaboration in ocean research, policy and management.
OceanConnectXL works in close connection with the OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA) of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). Invited by OTGA to contribute to its capacity-development activities, OceanConnectXL supports training, knowledge exchange and collaboration across the global ocean community.
By connecting people across generations, disciplines, regions and sectors, OceanConnectXL aims to turn a shared educational heritage into new research collaborations, partnerships and solutions for the ocean. In doing so, the initiative further strengthens Flanders’ long-standing role as an international hub for marine expertise and education, while extending its global impact.
